The FBI and partners warned in 2022 of more than 7,000 reports of image-based blackmail of minors in one year, with schemes often starting on "video chat applications that feel familiar and safe" (FBI). In the UK, Ofcom's children's safety codes took effect on 25 July 2025 (Ofcom), and penalties under the Online Safety Act reach up to £18 million or 10% of global revenue (Incode).
